Dr. Kan Ni has over 20 years expertise in Computational and Probabilistic Mechanics in Aerospace, Marine and Offshore, Automotive, and Civil Engineering. Particularly, Dr. Ni has been focusing on his research on computational solid mechanics in metal and composite materials, probabilistic and computational fracture mechanics, probabilistic damage tolerance and durability design, fatigue reliability, stochastic process and random filed simulation, finite element simulation of multiple coupled diffusions including heat, moisture, carbonation and chloride in concrete, finite element modeling of elastic-plastic buckling of airplane wing structures, reliability based structural design, nonlinear geometry and large deformation finite element in computational biomechanics, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), Reduced Order Models (ROM), and High-Dimensional Harmonic Balance (HDHB) in aeroelasticity and fluid-structure interaction, etc. Dr. Ni’s current research includes numerical modeling of nonlinear geometry and large deformation in aeroelasticity, stochastic meshless method (element free, extended finite element, and material point method) in fatigue crack propagation, and stochastic multiscale modeling, etc. Dr. Ni has wide multidiscipline research experiences in applying finite element packages including MSC/Patran, MSC/Nastran, MSC/Marc, Ansys, Abaqus, LS-Dyna, and LS-Opt in aeronautical, automotive and civil engineering. Dr. Ni has published over 60 technical papers in journals and conference proceedings. He is the reviewer of several international Journals, including Int. J of Fatigue, Reliability Engineering and System Safety, etc. Dr. Ni received his Ph.D. in solid mechanics in Dept. of Flight Vehicle Design and Applied Mechanics at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China, and his M.S. and B.S. in Aircraft Design at Northwestern Polytechnical University, China. From 1995 to 1996, he was a post doc in School of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). In 1997 he became an associate professor and in 2000 became a full professor at SJTU. From 2001 to 2005, he was a senior research associate in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University. From 2005 to 2006, he was an associate specialist in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at University of California, Irvine. From 2006 to 2007, he was a research scientist at University of Virginia and National Institute of Aerospace. From 2007 to 2008 he was a research associate at Northern California Institute of Research & Education. From 2008 to now, Dr. Kan Ni is a principal scientist at Advanced Dynamics Inc. (ADI), he is technically leading the computational structural dynamics and finite element group at ADI, and he is co-PI of several SBIR/STTR projects funded by DOD and NASA.
